MHLE (the Multi-Headed Learning Engine) is a note-taking and study platform where students write notes and receive AI-generated feedback that looks at their work from several angles. When a student's account or classroom is set up as a middle school account (roughly Grades 5–8), the entire platform automatically switches into Middle School Mode — a version of MHLE deliberately re-tuned for younger learners.
Middle School Mode changes three big things:
Middle School Mode is not a marketing label — it is a set of hard limits built into the platform. The age-appropriate rules described in this guide are enforced on our servers, not just in the app your child sees, so they cannot be switched off by the student.
Once per study session — the first time your child opens the app, opens a note, or runs an analysis that day — a small pop-up asks a single question: "How's your brain feeling right now?" Your child taps one of three answers:
Feeling energized. The AI adds a little extra challenge — one more layer of nuance and an open-ended question to stretch their thinking.
Feeling neutral. The AI responds at its normal, standard depth for middle school students.
Feeling drained. The AI keeps every piece of feedback very short (about 45 words each) and uses simpler vocabulary, so studying still happens without overload.
Research on middle school learners consistently shows that brief emotional self-check-ins predict sustained engagement better than almost any other signal. The Brain Break serves two purposes: it teaches your child a small habit of noticing their own energy level (a skill called metacognition), and it lets the platform meet them where they are — pushing a little harder on good days and easing off on hard ones.
A Brain Break answer goes "stale" after about 12 hours. If your child taps "Exhausted" on Tuesday evening, that answer does not follow them into Wednesday — the platform treats each new day as a fresh start and asks again.
Educators classify thinking tasks using a framework called Bloom's Taxonomy — a six-step ladder from simple to complex thinking: Remember → Understand → Apply → Analyze → Evaluate → Create. The higher rungs (Analyze, Evaluate, Create) demand abstract reasoning that most middle school students are still developing.
In Middle School Mode, the AI is hard-capped at the third rung — "Apply." That means it will ask your child to remember facts, explain ideas in their own words, and use what they learned in a concrete example. It will not ask them to deconstruct competing arguments, judge the validity of sources, or produce original theoretical work. Those demands increase frustration and overload at this age rather than productive learning.

Every piece of AI feedback a middle school student receives is passed through a reframing step before it is shown. Instead of verdicts about ability, feedback is phrased around effort and process. "This is wrong" becomes "Here's the step where things went sideways — try walking through it again." Decades of research (most famously by psychologist Carol Dweck) show this framing keeps young learners resilient and willing to try again.
Both the "Apply" ceiling and growth-mindset framing are written directly into the instructions our servers send to the AI for every single request from a middle school account. They are not settings a student can find and turn off.
After the AI finishes analyzing one of your child's notes, the platform quietly generates a micro-summary in the background: three short bullets answering "What did I just learn?", plus an editable one-liner your child can rewrite in their own words — the "explain it to a friend" summary.

The "friend summary" is fully editable, and once your child writes their own version, the platform never overwrites it. Explaining an idea in your own casual words is one of the best-studied learning techniques there is (educators call it the protégé effect) — writing it for an imaginary friend makes recall dramatically stronger than re-reading notes.
The micro-summary trains a habit called consolidation: pausing after learning to compress what just happened into a few plain sentences. For middle schoolers, this is an age-appropriate substitute for the heavier analytical tools older students use on the platform.

Your child's teacher or coach (if the account is part of a school classroom) can see the engagement signals above — including the current Brain Break state and its timestamp — on their instructor dashboard, alongside note activity. This is the same category of information a teacher would gather by walking around a classroom: who is engaged, who is writing, who seems worn out today. School data exports are designed to comply with FERPA (the U.S. student-records privacy law).
MHLE's privacy model for younger students is built around two U.S. laws: COPPA (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, which governs online services used by children under 13) and FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which protects student education records).
For students under 13, MHLE requires verifiable parental or guardian consent before the account can be used. Social and sharing features are opt-in, not opt-out: by default, a middle school student's notes and activity are private to them and (in school settings) their teacher.
The rules in this guide — the Apply-level AI ceiling, single-answer Brain Break storage, no advertising use, and opt-in social features — are product commitments, not configurable options. If any of these ever change materially, consent will be re-requested rather than assumed.
No. MHLE is not an open-ended chatbot. The AI responds only to study material your child submits — a note, a PDF, a class recording — and its responses are constrained by the age rules in Section 3 on every single request.
No. The mode follows the account's persona/grade setting, which students cannot change themselves, and the limits are enforced server-side.
No. It never affects grades or scores of any academic kind. Its only effects are (1) adjusting how long and complex the AI's feedback is for that session, and (2) letting a teacher see that a check-in happened — the same way a teacher notices a tired student in class.
You may request account deletion at any time, which removes your child's notes, summaries, and account data. If the account was created through a school, the school (as the education-records custodian under FERPA) can also initiate this.
Probably not — they most likely tapped "Exhausted" on that day's Brain Break. Short, simple feedback is the intended behavior for that state. It resets the next session.
